Lake Nussen in the Salzkammergut region in Upper Austria is a beautiful, small mountain lake near Bad Ischl and is wonderful for swimming and relaxing. Lake Nussen is rarely crowded and you can spend a relaxing afternoon undisturbed by crowds.

Lake Nussen in the Salzkammergut Austria
Lake Nussen is about 15 meters deep, about 600 meters long, up to 250 meters wide and is located in a nature reserve near Bad Ischl in Upper Austria directly on the border between Upper Austria and Salzburg region.
Nearby are, among others, the Gosausee or the beautiful Bluntaus lakes. The area around lake Nussen is known as a beautiful recreation area and is located between the famous sights Hallstatt and the lake Wolfgang.
Lake Nussen is designated as a bathing lake and therefore you can swim in it wonderfully. You can also take your dog to the lake or go by canoe across the lake. But you have to bring your own boat, because there is no rental or other infrastructure on site.
There is also no kiosk or other possibility to buy something to eat or drink. During our visit to lake Nussen we were just on our way to St. Wolfgang and needed a spontaneous cooling due to the heat. So we just got us something cold to drink in a nearby supermarket and then refreshed us with our dog Schoko in the cool water of the lake.
At the lake there is no lawn for sunbathing or something similar, but there is a small area with 2 benches and easy access to the lake. Since the road is far away, you can also enjoy the tranquility of nature and recover from your round trip through Austria.
Lake Nussen: Parking and Arrival
Lake Nussen in Upper Austria is located not far from Salzburg and Salzburger region and is a popular swimming lake for people and dogs. Not far from the lake is the federal road 158 between Hallstatt and Fuschl am See.
At the village of Ramsau (where is also a Spar supermarket to stock up on goodies for your day of swimming), turn onto Schneiderwirtstraße, which then leads along Ramsaustraße to the Nussensee parking lot Here also at Google Maps. The parking lot is not very large, so it could get crowded quickly on weekends when the weather is nice. You will then have to park closer to the main road and walk the rest.
Staying overnight at Lake Nussen
If you want to spend the night near lake Nussen, we can recommend the Pension Landhaus Fey. In this family-run guesthouse in the countryside, you can get a double room for as little as €80 per night and be at Lake Nussensee within 10 minutes or in Hallstatt or at Lake Wolfgang within 30 minutes. WLAN and a beautiful view of the greenery are also available. In winter, you can also plunge directly from the hotel on the ski slope, because this leads directly past the pension.
The hiking trail around Lake Nussen
Before you plunge into the cool waters of lake Nussen you can hike on a beautiful circular trail. The path is also suitable for families with small children or dogs and takes you around the lake in less than 40 minutes. You walk about 2 kilometers and have to overcome only about 50 meters of altitude.
The path is by no means boring or dead straight past the lake, but really goes up and down over hill and dale and always offers wonderful views of the lake. It is really a beautiful, natural walk. Good shoes are nevertheless a must.
If you want to walk a little further, you can extend the circular walk and walk to the ruin Wildenstein. On this hiking trail you are on the way for more than 4 hours and almost 15 kilometers. You can find more information on this website.
