Which Koh Kood hotels are right for you? On this quiet island in eastern Thailand there are no big hotel chains, just small beach resorts, bungalows and pool villas on secluded bays. That’s why the area matters most: sometimes shops and restaurants are right around the corner, sometimes the resort is so remote that you can hardly get anywhere without a scooter, and the beach and water look different everywhere.

Here you’ll find out which area is the right base for your Koh Kood accommodation, how the beaches differ and which hotels we would shortlist for families, couples and small budgets. If you’re island-hopping on to Koh Mak afterwards, our guide to where to stay in Koh Mak will help.

Where to Stay in Koh Kood: How to Choose Your Base

Koh Kood (also spelled Ko Kut) is about 23 kilometers (14 miles) long and 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) wide, and most accommodation is on the west coast and in the south. The ferries from the mainland mostly dock at Ao Salat Pier in the north, where a shuttle to your hotel is usually included. Klong Mard Pier on the west coast, on the other hand, has no hotel transfer. The center of the island is Klong Chao Beach, with the most restaurants, shops and ATMs. Further south you’ll find Ao Tapao, a long, quiet beach, and the sheltered Bang Bao Bay. Ao Ngam Kho in the middle of the island has cheaper bungalows, and in the far south lie the remote bays of Klong Hin, Ao Phrao and Ao Jark.

Tides matter here. In Bang Bao Bay the beach shrinks to a narrow strip at high tide, and at Klong Hin the water pulls back a long way at low tide, exposing sandbars. If you want to swim in the sea every day, plan your swim times around the tide or pick a hotel with a pool.

Koh Kood Hotels by Area: The Best Areas Compared

Area Best for Vibe & evenings Price
Klong Chao Short distances, small budgets, first-timers Center of the island, shops, cafés and ATMs, liveliest in the evening $ to $$$$
Ao Tapao Couples, families, beach walks Long, quiet beach, few restaurants outside the resorts $$ to $$$
Bang Bao Bay Swimming, snorkeling, couples Sheltered bay, restaurants within walking distance, rather high prices $$ to $$$
Ao Ngam Kho Small budgets, peace and quiet, central location Sparsely built, coconut palms behind the beach, swimming not good everywhere $ to $$
South (Klong Hin & Ao Phrao) Couples and quiet-seekers with a scooter Very quiet and remote, food mostly at the resort $$ to $$$
North & Northeast Close to the ferry, seclusion, luxury Fishing village by the harbor, only a few hotels $ to $$$$

The price levels are rough guidelines ($ = cheap, $$ = mid-range, $$$ = upscale, $$$$ = luxury). Hotel prices on Koh Kood vary a lot with the season, and the most expensive time is high season from December to February. Always check current rates before you book.

Where to Stay at Klong Chao Beach: Best for Convenience and Short Distances

Klong Chao Beach is the tourist center of Koh Kood. Here you’ll find the most restaurants, cafés, shops, dive centers and ATMs, and the beach has fine sand and several beach resorts. It’s the busiest area on the island but still feels relaxed, and it’s where you’re most likely to get by without a scooter.

Price level: $ from $55

Where to Stay in Bang Bao Bay: Best for Swimming and Snorkeling

Bang Bao Bay is a horseshoe-shaped, very sheltered bay with calm water that’s great for swimming. The reef lies about 200 meters (650 feet) from the beach and makes the bay one of the best places for snorkeling. The sand gets narrow at high tide, so visit the beach around low tide if you can. There are a few restaurants and minimarkets within walking distance, and prices are a little higher than at Klong Chao Beach.

Ao Salat View Koh Kood is a simple, clean place with its own restaurant. Kama Siri Koh Kood offers cheap rooms, family rooms with a bunk bed, scooter rental and card payment.

More Koh Kood Resorts: For Pools, Seclusion and Luxury

Besides our main recommendations, there are a few more resorts that suit particular trips. Koh Kood Beach Resort is in the northern part of the west coast, has a pool and an almost private beach and offers two-bedroom rooms, although the kitchen closes as early as 9 p.m.

In Bang Bao Bay, Koh Kood Resort with two pools and a beach-club style is an alternative, but it has no beach stretch of its own. Way down south at Ao Phrao is Rest Sea Resort with villas, some with a private pool, and an outdoor pool with sea views, in a very remote spot.

At Klong Chao Beach you’ll find Peter Pan Resort with rooms and villas right on the river, a beach restaurant with a bar and rooms for up to four people, although the facilities are simple and breakfast is basic. In Bang Bao Bay, Captain Hook Resort is just a one-minute walk from the beach, with pool suites, kayaking and snorkeling, and check-in until 8 p.m., although guests rate the food at the resort differently. On Ao Tapao, Shantaa Resort has bungalows and villas with a saltwater infinity pool, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) from the beach and with its own beach access.

When low tide or wind makes swimming in the sea difficult, a hotel pool is worth its weight in gold. These properties have a pool:

Which Area Is Right for You?

  • You’re traveling with kids: Ao Tapao or Bang Bao Bay, where there are family rooms and villas for four people and the water is calm.
  • You want short distances to restaurants and shops: Klong Chao Beach.
  • You’re on a small budget: Klong Chao with Bann Klong Jao Homestay, or Ao Ngam Kho with Suan Maprao Ko Kut Resort.
  • You want comfort and peace on the beach: Ao Tapao, for example Koh Kood Paradise Beach.
  • You want great swimming and snorkeling: Bang Bao Bay, more affordably at Siam Beach Resort.
  • You want luxury and privacy: High Season on Klong Chao Beach or Hideout in the south.
  • You’re after total quiet and have a scooter: Klong Hin, Ao Phrao or Ao Jark in the south, or alternatively Ao Salat in the north.

How Much Does Accommodation on Koh Kood Cost?

Accommodation on Koh Kood costs from around $25 per night, while luxury pool villas like High Season Pool Villa & Spa start at about $560. The low end is simple bungalows, guesthouses and two-star properties. Mid-range resorts like Koh Kood Paradise Beach can be booked from about $90.

Expect higher prices between December and February. The ferry, transfers and the scooter add costs that you shouldn’t forget when planning your budget.

Getting Around Koh Kood from Your Hotel

Koh Kood has no airport. Most travelers fly with Bangkok Airways from Bangkok to Trat or take a bus, then catch the ferry at Laem Sok Pier, a ride of about an hour. Operators include Koh Kood Princess, Ko Kut Express and Boonsiri, and the last boats usually leave in the early afternoon. In high season, speedboats and catamarans also run to the neighboring islands of Koh Chang and Koh Mak. Schedules are changed fairly often, so check again shortly before you leave.

On the island there’s no public transport and no rental cars. Most places rent out scooters for about $6 to $9 per day, and taxis can be arranged through your accommodation, although there are only a few. Traffic is light, but there’s sand on the roads in places, which makes riding a scooter slippery. At Klong Chao Beach you can also reach restaurants and shops on foot.

Is It Safe to Stay on Koh Kood?

Yes, Koh Kood is peaceful and laid-back for vacationers. The most dangerous thing is road traffic on a scooter, mainly because of the sand on the road. If you don’t ride confidently, book a transfer instead, stay at the resort after dark and always wear a helmet. Sandflies and mosquitoes are a real issue, so bring insect repellent, and take out travel health insurance. There’s a small hospital on the island, and serious cases are taken to the mainland by boat.

Tips for Booking

  • Keep an eye on the season: The best time to travel is between November and April, and it’s most expensive in December, January and February. From May to October fewer boats run, and some resorts close for a while.
  • Reserve in good time: The small resorts often book out quickly around Christmas and New Year.
  • Coordinate ferry times and check-in: The last boats leave early, and many hotels have fixed check-in windows. If you arrive later, let the hotel know in advance.
  • Pier pickup: Many resorts are far from the pier, so ask whether the hotel picks you up and at what price.
  • Bring cash: ATMs are mainly at Klong Chao Beach, and they’re sometimes empty.
  • Check the beach location carefully: Some properties are a little way from the sea, and at some beaches the water level decides whether you can swim.

Yes, if you want a calm island instead of nightlife. Koh Kood is quieter than most islands in Thailand, with secluded bays, snorkeling and kayaking through the mangroves. The trade-offs are the long journey, a limited choice of restaurants outside Klong Chao Beach and the need for a scooter or transfer in many areas.

How many nights should you stay on Koh Kood?

We recommend at least three to five nights. Getting there by bus or plane and boat takes a long time, and you need a little time for beach days, snorkeling and a boat trip to the small neighboring islands.

Koh Kood is calmer than most islands in Thailand, and the beach you stay on shapes your vacation more than the individual room. So first decide whether you want restaurants within walking distance or silence by the sea, and then choose your Koh Kood hotels accordingly. We think Ao Tapao works well for families, Klong Chao Beach and Ao Ngam Kho are worth a look on a small budget, and the pool villas in the south or at Klong Chao Beach are the pick for luxury and seclusion.
