The Hulderstigen hike in Jotunheimen National Park is an unknown, but nevertheless very beautiful and relaxing hike, which is completely without climbs and therefore really walkable for everyone. It is almost a rest to do the Hulderstigen hike after a strenuous hike like the Besseggen or the Knutshoe.
We are Sabrina and Andreas, two adventurous travelers who never miss an opportunity to discover the world. Whether by plane to distant countries or with our campervan Bruno, we just love to travel. We hope to give you helpful tips for your next trip on our blog.
Sabrina & Andreas Globetrotters, Travelers, Adventurers
When you park your car at the free parking lot (Google Maps link) (where you will also find a dry toilet) you will already see the beautiful wooden bridge that spans the 100 km long Sjoa River.
Directly behind it the path starts and since the hike is designed as a cultural and educational trail, there are a total of 15 information boards along the entire length of the hike on which you can find information about the history of the landscape, the wildlife or the plants in the area.
The path leads really idyllic through the original forest in the national park and for a long time past a stream before you reach a large lake approximately in the middle of the Hulderstigen hike.
There is also a guest book hidden in a wooden box in which you should definitely sign. Every now and then a sheep bleats in the surroundings, because they can run around here freely. Therefore, you should absolutely leash dogs here.
Also, you should definitely look in between at the numerous information boards, because on one we were presented, for example, information about ant hills, which were located right next to the path and which we would have otherwise walked past.
We felt totally comfortable during the hike, because the path is not strenuous at all, but you are still led through a picture book scenery and learn something about fauna, flora and history through the information boards.
In addition to that, you will probably be all alone here and have nature to yourself.
Hulderstigen | Hiking Tips
Hulderstigen With Dogs
It is absolutely no problem to walk the hike also with dogs. There is enough water on the way, so you don’t have to take water for your dog. It is only important that dogs are leashed.
Hulderstigen with Wheelchair or Stroller
Even if the Hulderstigen hiking trail has no slopes, it is unfortunately not possible to walk it with a stroller or wheelchair. Because one runs directly through the forest and it goes partly over wooden planks or logs, if a small brook is to be crossed.

Stay in a traditional Norwegian Wooden House with Modern Rooms
In Vågåmo you can really have a good time in the SOV Lodge*. From the outside, the accommodation is rather unassuming, like a normal Norwegian log cabin.
But the interior is just a beautiful mix of modern and traditional. There is also a super delicious breakfast. Feel free to plan the next 2-3 nights here.
